3 Simple Ways to Organize a Clothing Closet
Dear K & K: I was hoping to get your advice on how best to organize a clothing closet. I like to organize my clothes by color because it is a simple way to know where to put something and easy for the cleaning service. It also looks really nice, which is important to me. But I’m not sure this is the most efficient way. Everything is mixed up within each color — night dresses, work dresses, casual pants, etc. How would you recommend I [organize] my closet and drawers to look pretty and tidy but also be functional? Are there separators that exist to separate types of clothes within the same color? Or what other ideas would you give me? Signed: Colors in Colorado
Dear Colors: Organizing your clothes by color is an excellent idea. But before we even discuss how to organize a clothing closet, you need to have all of your clothes on matching hangers. Having everything on the same visual plane helps you see things AND make things look tidier. We prefer Huggable Hangers in simple shades that will be easy to match when you need to buy more. It’s just a fact of life that you will eventually need to buy more of them.
Next, the two other simple ways to your organize your clothing closet. Which one you choose depends on your first love: color or categories. There are people who just want it done by color because that’s their jam (often Funs). Unless my client is a Fun, I organize clothing closets by categories (work/play/formal) OR (tanks/blouses/sweaters/blazers/pants/skirts/dresses) and then I organize by color within each category. If you want to make these category separations clearer then buy closet rod separators and label each category. This is a great idea if you’ve got someone else helping you with laundry etc. Hope that helps! All our best: Katie & Kelly
