Avoiding the Juniors Department
There’s nothing quite like the botox grandmas in their Juicy Couture velour track suits—I mean what’s more cringe inducing than a 59 year old with the word juicy across her tush? Getting older is something that should be done with grace — and yes we think that some personality types might be more prone towards this fashion “oh no!” than others.
This is an over generalization, but we think it’s the free spirited Fun Freedoms (SFPs) with their relaxed attitudes towards fashion and natural attraction to color and patterns who will tend to hold onto youth culture a bit longer than they should…BUT they are not alone. The point here is to check yourself. All of us have the tendency to hold onto things longer than we should, whether they are youthful trends, or old styles. Organic Freedoms (NFPs) hold onto everything too long, fashion included and definitely think of themselves as young at heart which can become troublesome in later fashion years. And Classics (SJs) of both varieties (SFJs & STJs), Fun Structures (STPs) and all Smarts (NTs) hold tight onto what they know and usually those are classic trends and basic preppy wear — think Brooks Brothers and Lands End. These types should probably take the hint that these companies’ new “hip” lines of more trendy clothing meant to bring in new customers, means you should take a hint and try something new and “younger” once in a while.
We wish we had some steadfast rules for trendy youth fashion in your golden years and wait…we do. If you’re over 40 (and that includes Katie) stay away from micro minis and belly shirts from the juniors department….hmm.. that might also hold true for those over 30. Regular minis are fine if you’ve got the gams for them — hello Tina Turner — but if you’ve had kids I don’t think I have to tell you to keep your belly to yourself unless you’re at the beach or the pool. And if you DO look good in a two piece after kids Katie hates you. (And that includes her sister!)
Following the latest trends doesn’t mean you have to dress like a 20 year old. There’s so much “fast fashion” readily at hand that the juniors department isn’t needed to look up to date. Stores like Zara, H&M, and J. Crew, etc. frankly have amazing trendy clothes but are mature enough for anyone of any age.
