Decorate the Walls
“Repeat: My closet is not a garage. Prettify it with ladylike wall prints and clear shelves. [Wallpaper your closet and repurpose acrylic shelves to store shoes]” This tip from “Glam New Closet” In Style, January 2009 starts off the week because it was such an eye opener for me as Classic. Never in a million years would I’ve thought to “decorate” a closet.
This tip, is semi-fabulous. First, how much more amazing would your closet look if it had wallpaper?? Obviously, this is for those who own their home or plan to be in their rental for eons, because I can think of nothing more annoying than removing wallpaper off of a rental wall. So, the rental interpretation for this might be to paint your closet a cool vibrant hue—a shade that you love but don’t have the guts or design prowess to pull off out in the open.
This tip could work for all types. The difference will be in what wallpaper you choose and when it gets done. Classics, Smart Structures & Organic Structures might think this idea silly or even if we like it, a more practical spouse might chastise us into not doing it. There are likely more pressing To-Do’s on our list. Funs, Smart Freedoms and Organic Freedoms, I could see you all digging this dream closet idea. But unless you have a general contractor doing stuff for you when this idea comes upon you, it might take a little while for you to get it done. (But, it might be the inspiration you need to finally get that closet cleaned out. Organic Freedoms especially can get excited about such menial tasks as cleaning out a closet when there’s an aesthetic improvement at the beginning of the project!)
Now as to why this tip is half-baked. The acrylic shelves is a particularly cool idea because it will give you a fun uber modern touch and not clash with whatever wallpaper you choose. BUT, I can see in the photo that the shoes are at an angle because they’re too long for it—these ones from The Container Store are 6” deep. So, how would this ever work if you are a regular sized woman with feet bigger than a 10 year olds? It’s won’t.
(Oh and for Classics & Funs … if you want to do this AND our closet tip on getting all matching hangers, remember to buy the wallpaper first and then the hangers. Same advice to everyone else but Classics & Funs will be the most bothered if the pairing is off.)
