Find Storage That’s Useful and Beautiful

“Stash your underwear, socks, swimsuits and other sweet little nothings in an elegant lingerie chest.”  When I first read this tip from “Glam New Closet” In Style, January 2009 I thought, “Well, duh. Thanks for that uselessly, obvious tip.” That’s when it dawned on me that I had a perfectly graceless plastic make shift set of drawers acting as a lingerie chest in my closet. And I mean makeshift because in my old apartment they were on shelves acting as an apothecary cabinet for my linen closet (see these beautiful photos at the end of this essay … Kate & I did this closet and I say with out an ounce of modesty that it was as fabulous as it looks).

I’ve since moved from that apartment and as a Classic I naturally love to reuse what I already have so I’ve put them to new use because I now lack a proper linen closet (linens now share their home with my son’s clothes.) Other types like to reuse, but Classics tend to do it obsessively. It’s hardest for Funs and Classics to let go of something if it has “value.”

Just because it’s behind closed doors doesn’t mean it shouldn’t look beautiful. And even if you don’t have room in a closet, it might be nice to have an extra set of small drawers for the small stuff you own instead of cluttering up a dresser.

This tip will likely resonate with the Smarts & Organics in this world because you understand the need for aesthetic beauty in your surroundings — even closets. Now, Organic Structures & Smart Structures can be practical like Classics with regard to putting off unnecessary purchases if you’re on a budget. But, in the end, you might enjoy having the extra drawer space in your main dresser to SEE more of the things that you have.

And here’s our uselessly, obvious tip — if you have plastic bins out in the open in your bedroom and you’re over the age of 24, it’s time to get an attractive set of drawers. And there’s really no excuse when Ikea exists.

Good for all
