No. More. Mismatched. Hangers!
Ah Mommy Dearest and her hatred of wire hangers. We don’t hate wire hangers. They’re matching at least, and unless you have a ladies’ maid or valet, then who is going to swap out those wire drycleaning hangers for more solid stuff? Yeah, not me either. But we’re often asked for universal advice that holds true for all types and top of our list is: Matching Hangers. We can’t tell you how revolutionary this advice is because you really have to see it to believe it. Especially you frugal types. But if you only listen to one piece of advice we give, this is the advice to take.
Yes before matching bins, double hang, frankly even purging for some types, buying new and matching hangers will change your life hands down. Buying new hangers can also be a great impetus for purging because you have to trade out the old hangers for new and putting clothes you don’t like, don’t fit, or you don’t wear becomes such a chore you’d rather throw them out then put them back on a hanger.
Coat closets need sturdy hangers, preferably wooden if you have the room or metal tailor hangers if you don’t. Those ubiquitous tubular plastic hangers? Those are the ones I might throw a tantrum over. No. More. Plastic. Hangers! They don’t hold the weight of a wool coat and their slippery surface means half of your wardrobe is always falling off onto the floor or heap of shoes below. All types are drawn to the cheap deal that plastic hangers hold, but resist. If you must have cheap hangers, then hoard your dry cleaning hangers. If you have the space and the means, then buy whatever you think is luxury. Just make sure they match.
Those of us who don’t have the means or the room, we suggest huggable hangers. Nothing falls off of them, you don’t even need those little grooves in the top or hooks hanging down to keep your camisoles from falling off. Get a color you love and get two times more than you need. In fact before you purge, go ahead and get as many hangers as you have in your closet right now. Plan for the worst of times, closet organization wise, and you’ll always have plenty of your favorite hangers which will stop you from hanging onto the crappy plastic.
And if you still don’t know why matching hangers are so important, here’s a quick list:
- All your clothes or coats are hanging at the same height.
- The uniformity of the height is more pleasing to the eye.
- You can find clothes easier because the similar background helps your clothes or coats stand out.
- It’s easier to store and retrieve your things — as in THE foundation to organization if not the very definition of it.
