Play Some Funky Music with a Classic Style
There’s a reason Smarts (NT) also gravitate towards the Classic’s (SJ) preppy and traditional style and that’s because it’s well-accepted and easy to pull off because there are so many rules. But it also means your wardrobe can quickly begin to look dated and tired. The best way to combat this is to go against your natural preferences and quietly try some of the funky new trends out there today.
Real Simple calls this style “Preppy” because, um, it is! But frankly I was drawn to the retro pattern on the shirt, so there’s probably a little something for everyone in this outfit.
“Penny loafers and ribbon belts used to be par for the course. But replace them with accents that aren’t Preppy Handbook-approved, like a slick black bag, kittenish pumps, a studded belt, and spiky earrings, and your nautical pea coat and Cape Cod-bright cords take on a cool, citified feel”
I knew Real Simple was onto something when I showed this photo to my Classic, preppy, AND trendy sister. She loved the bright cords and already had a pair of trendy leopard print shoes! The key to this outfit, and frankly for any type that is trying to push their natural style preferences, is to start with accessories. What makes this preppy outfit on trend is the shoes, the bag, the belt, the earrings, etc. So keep all your preppy stand-bys and hide away those ribbon belts, penny loafers and matching pearls!
