Slutty Nurses, Sexy Cats and Other Halloween Oddities Explained
Halloween has always been one of my favorite holidays because besides getting to wear whatever I want, I get to eat whatever I want and that’s always a beautiful thing in my book. Halloween is a day when you can be whoever you want, natural personality preferences be damned. It’s probably why so many typically buttoned up Classic (SJ) 20-somethings dress up like slutty nurses, cats, witches, etc. on All Hallow’s Eve. But it’s a lot harder to not be who we are when we go about becoming someone else. And if you need a reason to read more, an image of Classic (SJ) Kelly as a Wonder Twin with a codpiece awaits you on our website …
Halloween junkies all have their favorite costumes. Katie has two competing favorites, both made by her artist Organic Structure (NFJ) mother, and all Star Wars related — Princess Leah, complete with her mom’s wig pieces from her wedding as the iconic hairdo, and a life size R2D2 paper costume, detailed, hand drawn and mixed with shiny paper as you can see above. I don’t think that as an Organic Structure who likes to get things done, she would have had the patience for that if not for her natural talent, but her need to get things done also meant that her kids always had awesome costumes in time for the annual kid’s candy grab.
Kelly noted how ironic it is that Katie’s favorite costumes were made by her mother and that she has never MADE something similar for her kids. Their mother was unable to deliver Kelly’s Halloween dream of being Darth Vader. So Kelly’s all time favorite costume was made by her and her best friend Megan another Organic Freedom (NFP) 5 years ago in Indianapolis — but, really, Kelly, the Little Red Hen Classic Freedom (SFJ) ended up making it. They’d decided to go to a neighborhood party as the Wonder Twins and split costume prep ahead of time. Kelly arrived with the perfect wigs from NYC and Megan presented her with garments that looked like blue and red pyjamas from Target. Kelly informed her that Wonder Twins wore purple and had yellow letters for Zane & Jayne. So that day, after downing a beer or two, Kelly dragged Megan to Joann Fabrics and the local ballet attire store and voila …
Personally, I don’t think I’ll ever beat the year I was Edie Sedgwick. It was a golden Halloween moment, other than the fact that my peers are clueless and had no idea who I was. I already owned a mod little black dress and some boots so I was all set. My friend lent me one of her grandmother’s beautiful floor length fur coats so all I had to buy was a short blonde wig. I did my makeup just right and I had put together the perfect Edie Sedgwick. I love the idea of taking things I already own and running with them.
The following year I was a hippie — not as inexpensive as lovely Edie but again, I had an image in my head and nothing would deter me. I got myself a short white dress with winged out sleeves, and a fringe vest that took me a month’s quest to find. I visited every website, thrift store, and flea market until I found the perfect one. I wouldn’t accept anything less than my perfect vision. Whether it was stuff I had to search high and low for, or things I already had in my closet I had a big picture as an Organic (NF) and the patience of an Organic Freedom (NFP) to see it through.
This year, Classic Freedom (SFJ) Kelly, set out on a different mission of her own. Her wonderful son Teddy wants to be Sponge Bob Square pants for Halloween, she can quickly have it with a click of a button from just about any costume website — a perfect solution for those get it done yesterday Classics (SJ). To keep a running theme she came up with the idea to make her 6 month old, Charlie, Sponge Bob’s sometimes mentally challenged best friend, Patrick Star, which for some odd reason no store bought costumes exist. Instead of going back to the drawing board for Charlie’s costume she decided to make her own Patrick Star costume to which I laughed. Like Katie, I couldn’t imagine taking care of all the details involved in sewing my own costume. Sewing is something that comes easy to detail-oriented types like Classics and Funs (SP), and we suspect they’re the reason Joann.com fabric stays in business.
Now, if you notice all the 70’s era non-instagramed photos, Kelly’s costumes (witch to the left, ghost from up top) were all uncreative because they were all Kelly’s generic classic, Classic (SJ) ideas — save the great Darth Vader idea that her mom was clearly too stymied to come up with! (And if you notice the website’s banner, when Katie DID do a witch, she made sure to also dress her kids up as Dorothy & Glenda from Oz) Kelly’s actual penultimate costume was created working WITH an Organic Freedom (NFP). Great idea and then the actual brilliant execution was all her. In fact you could say the same for Katie too. She had great ideas and a Little Red Hen in her mom. The Structure (J) in Organic Structure (NFJ) really helps types get things done. My costumes highlight my Organic Freedom creativity to come up with great ideas and then I make sure not to pick ones that involve too much arts and craft work which is the detail strength of Funs and Classics. And frankly, spending lots of time searching for a fringe vest everywhere was tons of fun for me, but to Kelly, it sounded like torture!!
So to recap costumes and personality type: Classics (SJs) tend to go with what’s easiest — store bought — unless, like Kelly, they have a really cool idea that must be done or are constricted by cost. Funs (SP) are also adept at doing the home-made detail oriented costume thing too, but they have to make sure to allot enough time to finish, or make sure it’s something that doesn’t take too much time. Organic Structures (NFJ) and Smart Structures (NTJ) go with what’s easiest — often store bought — unless constricted by cost or have such an amazing idea that crafting it is the only answer (see R2D2 above!) Organic Freedoms (NFP) and Smart Freedoms (NTP) like me have great ideas but have trouble following through with TOO much sewing and crafting in time for the big day. So we’re likely to stick to the clever non sewing ideas or buy something! If Katie’s mother wasn’t a creative type and back in the 70s store-bought costumes were as inexpensive and creative as they are today, we think she would have gone store bought too!
