At first I thought today’s Smart picks were an utterly random smorgasbord of products. But, then I realized there was something eerily all encompassing about the picks: a map, high-end earphones, and ham. Pretty much everything a person might need to survive on a remote island as long as they had an iPad or something. This is why Smarts run the world. Even by accident, their picks are a survival kit.

What struck me about the Personalized World Map is how much it resembles a Risk board — a board game almost definitely created by and for aspiring Smart generals. “Record your travels-past, planned, and hoped for – on this grandly-sized, full-color map. What makes it truly fabulous is the metal crest printed with up to 50 characters of your choosing: “The Taylor Family Travels,” “Andrea and John’s Honeymoon Trip.” Andrea and John must have had one fantastic honeymoon since they need a global map to display it. Our dad, a Smart Structure, got this to mark my parents’ lifetime travels. My mom isn’t in love with it but since it’s in the upstairs hallway, she allows it to exist in her home. $100-170 depending on size. Or if stuck on a desert island, you can figure out which shipping lanes you’re located near.

Next up we have Beats by Dr. Dre from Monster. “Sound really matters. Hear what you’ve been missing. Featuring advanced driver and speaker design, powered digital amplification, and powered noise cancellation, you’ll hear music the way today’s top artists and producers want you to hear it.” Even if you’re stuck on a remote, desert island, you can hear quality music. And if your iPhone ever picks up a signal on said desert island, the earphones have a built-in mic for hands-free calling. Always important when making emergency calls.

But, until you get that cellular signal, you’ll at least have some Spiral Sliced City Ham from Burger’s Smokehouse. This is actually no longer available at SkyMall. We had one of our resident Smarts going through the December SkyMall. But, it looks quite delicious and I’m betting it’s back for 2011’s holidays. “When the NBC Today Show was looking for a ham to feature on TV Christmas day, whose did they choose?” You guessed it folks. Maybe send your dad some specialty food for Father’s Day. Is it just me or is Father’s Day tougher than Mother’s Day?
