The Art of Jewelry Organziation
I know it sounds a bit superficial, but I swear, nothing has changed my life in a bigger way than making a pretty cork board on which to hang my jewelry. I used to go months without changing my jewelry until the day I realized I had a tan line on my finger from the ring I never change. And since I’m not married, it was then that I knew something had to be done.
Most visual displays of jewelry are best for the types, like myself, who need to see things to remember that they exist — Organics and Smarts. Funs like to have a little of both and Classics prefer to have their precious baubles safely hidden in boxes or the top drawer to their dresser.
We’ve addressed this topic before, but I wanted to share my DIY project because it was pretty easy, and now I feel like I have turned my jewelry into a work of art for my bedroom. Anyone — actually Katie just bought some wood framed cork boards from The Container Store a few years back — could use plain cork to hang up their jewels, but the frame is really what makes it feel like art, and then I very easily lined the cork with a fun fabric using a staple gun. And for all you Smarts out there who think this is a fabulous idea but would rather someone else do all the hard work? PulpProducts are the easier, softer way.
A variation on the cork board idea is yet another use for the shadow box. Just screw small hooks into the top and you can easily hang anything from necklaces to bracelets. Katie actually just put hooks on the top of an an enclosed bookshelf in her bathroom to hang her jewels. If you are feeling extra creative, line the back of the shadowbox with contact paper or fabric for a little flare. Oh and if you just want to buy it? Last month’s Oprah magazine found this great product called the Izzy Jewel Box. I wasn’t actually able to find it when I went on Oprah’s site later — what is it about making it so hard to find stuff online that you saw in a magazine? — but I did find it through this great site: Iamstyle-ish.
