The Old Switcharoo
So what’s our last fashion sin of the week? The big old black blah bag that has everything you could ever possibly need and goes with everything you’ve ever owned. But fashionwise? It’s a waste of a damn good accessory.
Yes, we know it can be tedious to switch out purses with every outfit, but while the Mary Poppins bag is great for running all over town, when the sun goes down it’s really hard to switch it out for a simple clutch. And even if it means just switching to a cream or grey colored bag for Spring, it’s a small change that can make a big impact. And every bag change helps you get rid of things you don’t need and make sure your purse doesn’t become a trash bag!
And who out of all the PixieTypes is most likely to be guilty of this? Those types who are overwhelmed by details and the structure involved remembering all those little things that you might possibly need and also has enough time to make sure the purse’s color or pattern coordinates with your outfit or coat. Who are those types? Oh the worst offender is probably yours truly, an Organic Freedom (NFP). Unless, like me, you consider yourself a fashionista or have joined an industry that demands such fashion flair — ie. the Ann Hathaway character’s transformation in The Devil Wears Prada. In this case you’ll have no problem stretching your preference for something you love, care about, or is crucial to your line of work. This will hold true for Smart Freedoms (NTP) too.
Other types who have similar difficulties with detail like Smart Structures (NTJ) and Organic Structures (NFJ) will also have more trouble using their purse as an accessory. Fun Freedoms (SFP) and Fun Structures (STP) will also tend to default to a big old black bag because even though they have the wherewithal to remember all the things they will need and switch it up from time to time, they’re the ones who’ve lost track of time and are rushing out the door when they might otherwise be coordinating their bag with their outfit.
So who will have the easiest time using the purse as a fashion accessory? Yes we think that once those Classic Freedoms (SFJs) and Classic Structures (STJs) can let go of the utilitarian and practical nature of the handbag and see the dual benefit of its use as an easy way to pump up an outfit, they more than any other, have the innate ability to change up their handbags to match their outfits. These are the queens of the matchy matchy are they not? It takes serious attention to detail AND a love of structure and rules to pull this off. Plus, they’ve already figured out a system that will make it easier for all types to change out their bags more often.
Classics (SJs) have always known to keep their necessities in smaller bags, like with like. We’re pretty sure they invented the wallet and the small make-up bag. So make sure to have those and include another one for miscellaneous things like band aids, medicine, needle and thread, etc,. Or you can use something like this. It’s very helpful for larger bags, but becomes harder to fit into smaller ones. And don’t forget that when it comes to handbags, logo bags, animal prints and solid red actually function as neutrals and are a lot more fun than brown and black.
