Try a Chic Tray
This tip is from “Glam New Closet” In Style, January 2009. “Why are scarves and gloves always bunched at the bottom of the drawer? Shimmery stackables offer a stylish alternative. [Use serving trays to store scarves and gloves.]” This is a great idea and a way to expand your storage alternatives outside buyers’ fashion decisions at Bed, Bath & Beyond or The Container Store. But before you head to the store, remember, the devil is in the details.
I loved this idea because one of my pet peeves with regular bins for scarves and gloves is that the contents become a big jumbled mess. It’s only human nature to want to fill up the space. Trays would allow you to separate out more categories amongst your scarves or at least make it easier to get to them. If you want to stack the trays, don’t use metal—try to keep it light for ease of use. Also, before you go stacking them, see if there’s room for an additional shelf above your existing one. Often there is (especially if you’re just using trays) and a good handyman, Angie’s List, can put one in for you.
Classics, Funs, Organic & Smart Structures, I’d label the trays if possible. Organic & Smart Freedoms you could too but they’ll end up mixed up unless someone else is assisting you with this tray system. I’d also say that big bins are probably fine as you’re not as likely to fold your scarves perfectly to fit into a tray (unless it was drilled into you by your mother or a governess!) Organics & Smarts should ONLY keep big categories, whereas Classics and Funs can get super detailed if they desire.
As for the devil in the details—make sure you know the measurements of the depth and width of the shelves in your closet before you buy trays. Yes, you could get lucky but chances are you’ll buy trays that don’t fit or buy too much or too little. Take the time to measure (that means YOU Classics, Organics & Smart Structures).
