I’m assuming if you’re a woman over the age of 20 — and haven’t spent years living under a rock — you’ve heard of Retin-A. I’m a layman expert after 20 years of using it for acne. If I hadn’t, my face would be a sea of sun damage discoloration. Instead I’ve got one sun spot that my mom would roll her eyes at if I pointed it out. Recently, I received a free sample of FutureDerm Time Release Retinol-A and it blew away the Retin-A product my dermatologist had me using for anti-ageing as well as help with a recent acne breakout. Full disclosure the founder and CEO, Nicki Zevola, is dating one of my college friends AND she’s a personality type devotee.

I don’t know if it’s the time release aspect or the level of the active ingredient Retin-A but my skin is almost presentable sans make-up and it was absolutely hideous before. Friends were kind and pretended I was crazy but I had acne all over my cheeks and broken capillaries. It would’ve shown remarkable savvy for me to have taken before and after photos but I totally forgot. When you are raising two kids, trying to write a book, keeping a small business running, and volunteering at your kids school, “savvy” isn’t a tool you can easily access. At least, I can’t and therefore that’s why it dawned on me AFTER my skin improved that I should’ve done a before shot for more credibility.

I used the cream nightly for the past 3 weeks. As a Classic (SJ) I excel at routines like these but anyone is capable of doing this as I’ve noticed that vanity knows few personality type boundaries. I had some daily dry skin and peeling during the first week but I kept at it every night and doused my skin with lotion in the morning pre make-up. I also seem to get by without the antibiotics I was using for my acne breakout. What a boon because who really wants to spend the rest of their life on antibiotics!? Plus I had to use some strange mail order coupon to buy said antibiotics for $20 because Duane Reade wanted to charge me $1000. That’s dollars, not pesos.

I hope it’s now evident that I’m not giving this a thumbs up for all personality types because I got one bottle for free. I also got vitamin-C serum and haven’t used it as religiously because it made my face too shiny and the drop bottle was messier than the Retinol product that came in this great pump. I think Nicki said that they were changing packaging on this serum so I might try less of it on my face and see if it’s worth it to buy it when they’ve got new packaging.

Nicki Zevola, Founder and CEO of FutureDermAs with any medicine, read the directions on the package carefully. They tell you how to vary it if you have sensitive skin. If you’ve never used Retin-A before heed these cautionary words and don’t be a hero out of the gate. Ease into it. We’ll be back with more on Nicki from a personal perspective as we gave her some Pixie Tips for her Organic Structure (NFJ) desk.

How FutureDerm Time-Release Retinol 0.5 is Different

Our cream contains 0.5% concentrated retinol in a lightweight gel formula that is perfect for use with your favorite moisturizers.  Most retinoid creams are thicker, taking up to 30 minutes to absorb into the skin.  Ours absorbs in under a second, so you don’t have to wait before applying other moisturizers.

Our formula is designed to optimize the retinol activation process in the skin.  Retinol must be converted to isotretinoin by enzymes called retinyl ester hydrolases in order to become active within the skin.  Our formulation is designed to increase the efficiency of this process with an optimized delivery system and condition.

Our retinol is also microencapsulated and time-released, targeting retinoid receptors in the skin for a full eight hours.  This makes our cream ideal for nighttime use.
