You’ve Come a Long Way Baby
This PixieTip is for the non-challenged chalkboard writers in our midst. Chalkboards are no longer drab and square. You can get beautiful ones that look like silhouettes of antique mirrors or even elephants. They’re vinyl and stick on walls and you can easily remove them. I even moved this one from one apartment to the next. I was pretty impressed too.
There was maybe one tear when I carefully took it off the wall and carried it to our new apartment. Obviously, it helped that the new apartment was in the same building. One of these vinyl chalkboards might be trash if say you’re going to move one from say New York City to a house in the ‘burbs or do a cross-country move. But, if you’re an intrepid Classic, Smart Structure, or Organic Structure, I bet you could put some parchment paper on the back and roll it up. But, don’t hold me to it, as I haven’t tried it.
I have one in the kitchen to put cooking instructions up for my husband — true story, I once had to write down instructions for a BLT for him — and then I have two down low in our hallway as part of my wall collage of photos for my son to use. You can see it in the photo to the right. I realize a hallway isn’t the optimal place for most chalkboards but I live in Manhattan so a hallway is like a whole other room.
There are so many places to find these guys. I got the ones my son uses at Target. The one in my kitchen is from Etsy — next to Daily Grommet one of my favorite places to shop online for unique items. On Etsy there are tons of individual retailers selling them. Another place I’ve found is Wallies.com. They often change up their inventory so if you can’t find something you love now, keep checking back — you would be Funs, Smart Freedoms, and Organic Freedoms. I say this only because patience is harder for Classics, Smarts Structures and Organic Structures, and we’re more likely to settle for what’s out there in order to cross it off our lists.
